The 14 Kent care homes in Sittingbourne, Dartford, Ashford, Dover and more rated ‘outstanding’

Fourteen Kent care homes have been rated the best in the county by an independent watchdog.

Inspectors from the Care Quality Commission (CQC) regularly visit care homes to find out whether the service is safe, effective, caring, responsive and well-led.

There are four ratings given to health and social care services – these are Outstanding, Good, Requires Improvement and Inadequate.

Below are the 14 care homes that have been rated ‘Oustanding’, along with what inspectors had to say.

The inspectors said: “Since the last inspection in July 2016, the home has made several improvements and now meets the characteristics of outstanding in all areas and overall.

“By talking to people, observing interactions and looking through pictures, it was clear that people were living happy and fulfilling lives at the service.

“Relatives commented: ‘They deserve an outstanding rating, as a parent as a professional. It is an amazing, amazing place.

Rosedene Residential Care Limited

The inspectors wrote: “The service continued to be exceptionally caring.

“Staff had worked continuously to further develop the service and the effective area was now outstanding.

“As a result, it provided an exceptional service which benefited people and their loved ones.”

They added: “People living at Rosedene continued to receive an outstanding service.

“They lived fulfilled lives and were supported by staff who valued them as individuals and went the extra mile to make sure they were as happy and healthy as possible.”

Maylands

The inspectors explained: “We received wholly positive feedback about Maylands from people, relatives and professionals.

“We heard about exceptional standards of care and support which improved the quality of people’s lives and gave their families peace of mind.

“We observed warm, caring attitudes from staff and a real drive to provide the best possible service for people.

“The staff team was committed to the mission of the organisation, ‘to offer people a home for life.'”

The inspectors said: “People, relatives and health and social care professionals were consistently extremely positive about the service.

“Relatives told us that people had fewer incidents of behaviour that challenged and had seen improvements in people’s health.

“People told us that they were more independent and happier.

“One person said: ‘I am really happy now that I have moved in here, I feel more in control of my life’.

“The registered manager told us that since the last inspection they had embeded new ways of working and people had more choice and control over their lives.”

The inspectors wrote: “The management team provided people and staff information about COVID-19 in a variety of ways.

“This included easy-to-read guidance to help people understand the virus and support them to stay safe.

“People were supported to keep in touch with their relatives through video calls and phone calls.

“Records showed that people had been supported to visit their relatives in person when it was safe to do so.

“People were smiling and appeared happy and there was a calm atmosphere.”

Eglantine Villa Care Home

The inspectors explained: “People, their relatives, health care professionals and staff spoke positively about the service.

“Comments included ‘the whole team are very professional in every way but are also very upbeat and fun for [our loved one] to be with’ and: ‘[Staff] are wonderful.

“‘We never leave worrying about [our loved one] and if they are not well staff always ring and let me know. Excellent.'”

They stressed: “People were supported to take positive risks, maximising control over their lives.

“There was a strong, empowering and distinctive approach to safety and risk management.”

The inspectors said: “The staff team demonstrated outstanding care and compassion towards the people they supported.

“People and their relatives were highly complimentary about the care provided.

“They told us they were treated with complete dignity and respect and the care they received made a difference to the quality of their lives.

“People were encouraged to be independent, to make choices about all aspects of their lives and were supported to maintain links they had with the community.

“Staff knew people very well and told us they enjoyed their roles and were proud to work at the home.”

“People were supported to have visits from their relatives and friends in designated areas where social distancing was observed.

“Visits were staggered and restricted to 30 minutes and these areas were cleaned between visits.

“The home offered relatives a self-contained bedroom to stay in when their loved ones were receiving end-of-life care and support.”

The inspectors explained: “The provider had been extremely responsive to people’s needs and designed services specifically to meet people’s changing needs.

“People were happy and smiling. The sounds and movements people made mirrored the descriptions of the ‘happy’ sounds and movements within their care records.

“Relatives told us ‘I’m really happy with Beaver Lane and [registered manager] and the staff. Most staff have been there a long time’ and ‘staff are kind and caring’.”

The inspectors said: “During the inspection, we observed interactions between staff and people, it was clear to see engaging, empowering relationships between staff and people.

“People and staff told us, of their achievements.

“These included positive risk-taking in the form of people being supported to achieve things which were previously unattainable for example people with extreme levels of anxiety in crowds being supported to attend major events in London.

“Staff and the registered manager embraced a culture of placing people at the heart of everything at Wolverton Court.

“Every aspect of the service was person-centred, and staff were passionate about people they supported living the fullest most fulfilled life.”

The inspectors wrote: “People were given support to live a more active and meaningful life.

“It was clear that staff were very caring and committed to supporting people to live fulfilled lives.

“Staff shared the provider’s vision, that ‘everyone is unique, every day is special.'”

They added: “Staff tried to make every day special by trying to ensure people had a good day every day.

“People smiled and laughed with staff and staff responded to people and colleagues with kindness and respect.

“Staff felt supported, included and valued by the whole management team, one stated ‘I would never do anything else.'”

Chitty Barn

The inspectors explained: “People living at Chitty Barn had complex needs, which included restrictive routines which impacted on their daily lives which could at times last for many hours.

“With the help of healthcare professionals, individual behaviour training sessions and consistent staffing, this behaviour had been reduced and people were nowable to access the community, and visit their local GP.”

They added: “The provider had a positive approach to support people to reach their full potential, whilst reducing risks and keeping them safe.

“Staff had a good understanding of how to protect people from harm whilst upholding their rights to make choices and take risks to enhance their lives and seek new adventures.”

The Goodwins

The inspectors said: “The home has shown continuous improvement following our previous inspection in March 2016 and has met the characteristics of a good service in safe and effective and an outstanding service in all other areas and overall.

“For a home which supports people with multiple and complex needs and with behaviours that challenge, there have been remarkably positive and consistent outcomes for people.

“The registered manager told us ‘I have always run a home around whether I would be happy with my brother or sister living there, I would here.'”

Hale Place Farmhouse

The inspectors wrote: “People were well supported by staff to have telephone and internet contact with their family and friends.

“The staff facilitated in-person visits in a manner which minimised the risk of infection spread, including outside visits, and visits using specially built outside visitor rooms.

“The registered manager had plans in place to isolate people with COVID-19 to minimise transmission.

“The service had good supplies of personal protective equipment (PPE) that were readily available at stations throughout the service.”

They added: “Staff had received training on how to keep people safe during the COVID-19 pandemic and staff and residents were regularly tested for COVID-19.”
